Academic Excellence System (SEA)

ABOUT THE

Strategy

The Academic Excellence System (SEA) is a set of strategies and activities developed by different academic units and led by the Office of the Academic Vice Rector, where students play the leading role. It has a comprehensive approach that addresses different dimensions and acknowledges that academic performance is influenced by multiple variables. This implies developing multidimensional strategies at four key moments: before entering higher education, during the transition to higher education, throughout the academic journey, and in the transition to working life.

The Comprehensive Intervention Model Program to Reduce Dropout and Improve Academic Retention focuses on students in the basic cycle of Engineering and Sciences.

Through tutoring sessions led by outstanding students and monitoring sessions conducted by professors, this program promotes a shift in study culture by applying strategies such as collaborative learning, learning to learn, effective time management, and reading comprehension.

It is important to highlight that the activities offered in this program help students strengthen their knowledge acquisition process. Academic support is provided by outstanding students from the academic programs of Engineering and Sciences.

The SEA–Mathematics program provides academic support, monitoring, and guidance to students enrolled in mathematics courses such as Calculus, Algebra, Differential Equations, and Geometry, among others. Its purpose is to strengthen learning and develop the mathematical competencies necessary for academic success.

It is aimed at students who have repeatedly failed key mathematics courses, as well as those who wish to achieve outstanding academic performance.

The program offers:

  • Introductory Course in Mathematical Training (Pre-Calculus) and Mathematics Reinforcement Course for first-year students.
  • Group tutoring sessions, organized in coordination with the course instructor, where tutors review class topics, clarify doubts, and provide additional exercises.
  • Focused tutoring for students who have failed or are currently enrolled in critical mathematics courses.
  • Saturday workshops in Calculus and Algebra to strengthen key concepts.

The SEA–Mathematics program is developed in coordination with the School of Mathematics and includes a team of professors, teaching assistants, and tutors from the Mathematics and Mathematics Education programs, ensuring comprehensive academic support.

This program supports the strengthening of reading, writing, and speaking skills among students of the Universidad Industrial de Santander. Activities are led by professors specialized in language and literacy and are carried out through three courses designed to accompany different stages of the academic process.

  • Introductory Course in Academic Reading at the University (Pre-reading): for first-year students.
  • UIS Reading Clubs: a program that promotes reading habits and critical thinking through different literary, cultural, and artistic activities. UIS students from all academic levels participate weekly in pre-scheduled reading sessions, developing their reading skills and appreciation of literature.
  • Course in Reading, Writing, and Speaking for Degree Projects: open enrollment throughout the semester for students enrolled in the Degree Project I and II courses

In addition to contributing to the development of these skills, the program also seeks to encourage reading and writing habits as essential practices for fostering critical thinking, autonomous learning, and comprehensive education.

The program offers support in five key areas: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Descriptive Geometry, and English. Guidance is provided by outstanding student tutors who offer timely and effective assistance to strengthen learning and academic preparation.

Students can find the tutors at the tutoring desk on the first floor of the Central Library, easily identified by their vests with the SEA logo.

Additionally, for English tutoring sessions, Room 401 of the Institute of Languages is available, where students can improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through personalized sessions led by tutors specialized in English language teaching.

In this way, the SEA–Library program becomes an ally for academic success, providing close and specialized support exactly when students need it most.

The Academic Monitoring and Guidance Program for Students of the Faculty of Health (PSOAS) was created in 2020 with the purpose of generating spaces and academic support processes to promote meaningful learning in the health sciences.

To achieve this purpose, various strategies are implemented to address specific learning difficulties, facilitate the learning of ideas, concepts, and key processes in health education, and promote a culture of self-directed learning. It also provides preventive intervention in the academic support of subjects with high repetition rates, such as Morphophysiology, Biosciences, Pharmacology, and Cellular and Molecular Biology.

Tutoring sessions are conducted by professors from the Faculty of Health and outstanding students from different subjects, who assist their peers in solving doubts and reinforcing the content reviewed in class.

The Faculty of Human Sciences at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) is characterized by the disciplinary diversity that distinguishes each of the programs offered by its schools.

In this sense, SEA–HUMANAS reflects on and proposes various strategies for academic support, from a preventive and continuous approach, for subjects identified as critical. Its goal is to strengthen the appropriation of knowledge and skills required for the successful completion of these courses, helping to prevent dropout, repetition, conditional status, or academic probation among students of the Faculty.
